How (I think) this comm will work. [Aug. 21st, 2008|01:33 am]
The Ultimate Guide to Lost Fic

[Current Mood |excitedexcited]

I started off with the idea of amassing HUGE, comprehensive lists of fic, organized by character or theme. But of course, there's always the issue of being all-inclusive and fair and balanced if you're trying to draw up the "definitive" list of everything. And wow, would that be a lot of work, yes?

And then I hit on a way that I *think* this can work, and really, hewing closer to the comm's name: Lists, yes, but not definitive. Just short and on whatever character, pairing or theme strikes your fancy:

Such as:

- Five Fics That Changed My Mind About a Character (or Pairing)
- Five Fics About Desmond's Blue Shirt
- Five Fics About Sawyer's Hair
- Five Fics About Time Travel
- Five Fics Set in Las Vegas
- Five Rainy Day Fics... etc.

I'd like to stay away from calling these the "best" or anything. They'd just a jumping-off point for people who want to read that kind of thing. It wouldn't have to be five, exactly, it could be more. You could include one of your own fics or not. Ideally, people would list five (or ten) different authors, including one or two not on their flist.

Sound workable? I think this could work like the lostsquee luau, where people sign up for different days and then, instead of asking for fics, and writing fics, they would list a few existing fics. Thoughts? Questions?

I was thinking that the person who makes the post would provide links to at least three fics (with maybe a few words about each), so that the post will have a guaranteed list of fics to read! I never had much luck soliciting input on themes at my sawyerficrecs comm -- some got no comments at all! But people could absolutely comment to the post with other fics on the same theme. Anyway, that's my thoughts on how it would work! In theory, people would only sign up if they had a specific theme in mind and time to actually draw up a list. That way, too, I think that the comm wouldn't get swamped with too many posts.

Maybe there should be a first post of the kind of leave prompt/take prompt!

That sounds like a good idea. :)

Cool! Ignore the post I just left at your journal which was more comprehensive based and as you said, would require a lot of time and resources to set up. It would be lots of fun to do it this way and be as participatory as possible, plus you could go as broad in your request or as narrow as you like.

Although tagging may be an issue, what about having a sticky post table of contents that lists the lists?

Hee, will do! :)

And maybe we can keep up with a combo of memories and tags? That's the way I did it at sawyerficrecs, although it was never really had a lot of user participation.

I like this idea, and I hope it's a bit success!

it makes me think about the Supernatural comm spn_themes. it works in similar fashion. they closed the membership to a couple of people that make the main recs, and in comment people post their suggestions. I do not know if a closed membership is the way to go or not, maybe it could be more open so more people participate, though I suggest order so there is not a bazillion posts at first then it dies out.

I love the idea of a "luau style" distribution. Maybe there could be a big asking of "themes", then a list is set up and people chose their prompts and a posting date? (every day? every couple of days?)

a good place to go seek older fics for reccers would be nominations and the winners over at the lost_fic_awards :)

I do think it should be regulated somehow, which is how i hope the daily or weekly sign-ups would work. Only the person who's signed up for that day can post, was my thinking. I don't want to overwhelm the flist either, of course!

Yes, I think that's the logical next step! In some fashion or other! :)

I think this would work pretty well.

Would posts like "Five Vincent fics" be completely out, or just need to be changed into something more descriptive like "Five Fics about Vincent that are totally hilarious"?

I love the idea of luau-style signups for days, too.

Oh no, "Five Vincent fics" (or "Five Miles Fics") would be totally welcome. I figured that for the long-running characters, they'd need something a bit more specific, because "Five Sawyer Fics" would be just a bit broad! But for someone like Christian or Margot or Nadia, then I think no more qualifiers are needed!
